We’re continuing on with the food theme while visiting Los Angeles and today is going to be a good one. Do you like donuts, but you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle? Maybe you’ve given up on pastries if you’re gluten free or maybe you’re vegan. Fear not people because fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts will change your life!
What Exactly Are fōnuts Vegan and Gluten Free Donuts?
What is a fōnut? From the fōnut website:
[Fō•nut] n. – A doughnut that is baked and/or steamed, never fried. Origin: Faux-donut
Located on West Third Street in Los Angeles, fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts owners, pastry chef Waylynn Lucas and baker Nancy Truman opened fōnuts in August of 2011 with “a mission to elevate the coffee and donut experience into loftier and tastier realms. Baked and/or steamed and never fried, fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts replicate the donut taste you know and love, but give it a modern spin, featuring gluten-free and vegan options alongside traditional varieties. With an aversion to fryer oil and a focus on natural ingredients, Lucas and Truman accentuate the deliciousness of every fōnut bite.”
Why I Chose fōnuts Vegan And Gluten Free Donuts
Since I had seen fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts on television, I was super motivated to visit it in person and try a vegan fōnut. While I’m not much of a donut eater, there’s no holding back my husband from being all hot and bothered about donuts so this felt like a happy medium for the both of us. He would get his donut and I would get one that I might feel a little less guilty about eating. As long as I’m not eating them every day for every meal, it doesn’t hurt to have something a little decadent every once in awhile.
fōnuts Choice Options are Limitless
Maybe you’re not a vegan and the idea of a Maple Bacon or Cheddar Chorizo fōnut sounds intriguing to you. I promise you will have a difficult time choosing when you see how decadent they look sitting side by side in the case in all of their lusciousness.
Chocolate fōnut
Maybe you’re a traditionalist in which case the perfect fōnut for you might be the Chocolate fōnut with sprinkles, which also happens to be gluten free.
Coconut Passionfruit or Coconut Chocolate fōnut
Here’s where I had a hard time deciding. Should I pick the Coconut Passionfruit or the Coconut Chocolate fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts? Decisions, decisions!
Chocolate Hazelnut fōnut
Look at the abundance of hazelnuts on the super yummy looking Chocolate Hazelnut fōnut. It’s enrobed in chocolate and dripping in hazelnuts.
Glazed fōnut
Here’s another fōnut for the donut purist: A basic glazed fōnut, but the one thing about fōnuts is that there’s nothing basic in what they do. Deliciousness in every single bite, fōnuts might have you heading to the Betty Ford Clinic for a fōnuts detox program.
Strawberry Buttermilk or Red Velvet fōnut
Is it me or are the Strawberry Buttermilk and Red Velvet fōnuts pleading with me to pick them? Sorry guys, as much as I’d like to, I can only pick one of you and it looks like it’s going to be a vegan fōnut for me.
Blueberry Earl Grey fōnut
For the adventurous eater, why not try the Blueberry Earl Grey fōnut? Their flavors are constantly changing so you might want to try some of the standard flavors or maybe one of the specialty flavors available on the day of your visit like Pecan Pie or Pumpkin or the Vegan Banana Bread. Seems like the flavor possibilities are endless.
My Choice: Coconut Chocolate
Our beverage of choice was the LAMILL coffee to go with our perfect little fōnut. Once our order was ready, we took our drinks and fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts over to the side counter to sit down. With only a few stools available inside, you’re probably more likely to grab your fōnuts to go. This allows you to shove them down your face in private. My coconut chocolate fōnut was dense and tasty albeit crumbly, but that’s because of the sheer volume of coconut baked inside. Don’t think of a light and airy fried donut because fōnuts are far more like a cake-type donut. It was delicious, but I can’t imagine eating more than one. In fact, I couldn’t even finish mine, but I know someone who was elated when I abandoned the remainder of my fōnut.
After realizing that the counter inside was kind of narrow and a little uncomfortable and as it was great weather (as it always is in LA), we decided to sit outside. There are a few small tables and chairs available to sit, eat your fōnut, drink your coffee, and people watch. What could be better than that?
Grab Your fōnuts And Relax
fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts range in price from $2.75 to $3.50 each, $18 for a half dozen, or $36 for a baker’s dozen. Grab a cup of LAMILL coffee, a fōnut, and relax. After all, you’ll want to sit back and enjoy all the tasty goodness in each and every bite of the deliciousness that is fōnuts vegan and gluten free donuts.
