The Museum of the Confederacy | Appomattox, VA

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture, Destinations, USA

The Museum of the Confederacy Having grown up in New York, I can honestly say that visiting a museum about the Confederacy was never really on my bucket list.  However, one of my stops on my recent trip to Lynchburg, VA was at The Museum of the Confederacy in Appomattox, the largest capital project scheduled… Read More

Appomattox Court House National Historic Park

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture, Destinations, USA, Virginia

How can you spark an interest in history for someone who says they have no interest in the subject? Instead of making them read history, show them history.  One way you can do this is by taking them to Virginia, a state rich in history with an abundance of historical sites.  One of these sites… Read More

Living Live Without Regret

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture

On this anniversary of 9/11, the nonstop coverage that used to mark this date has now been replaced with regular programming.  There are children growing up in a post-9/11 world who will never know any other way of life.  But for those of us that were around on 9/11, we know that the world was… Read More

Melodies and Travel Memories

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture

Melodies and Travel Memories Let’s face it.  Music can enhance memory so it’s no surprise that during those special and important moments in our lives, we often have a memory connected to a specific song. As for me, my brain is chock full of melodies and travel memories. It’s safe to say that my list of… Read More

Travel Responsibility: Travel Professionals Giving Back

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture

Whether you travel often or only occasionally or if you work in travel, do you believe you have a responsibility to the world to leave it better than how it was before you arrived? Anyone who works in tourism, be it a cruise line, resort, CEO, hotel front desk clerk, travel agent, travel writer, or… Read More

Patronymics | Understanding Names in Iceland

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture, Iceland
Patronymics

My guess is that if you are like me and live anywhere outside of Iceland, you are more than familiar with the concept of names and how people call and refer to one another.  Take that and forget about it because in Iceland they use patronymics.  What? Let’s start with an example like that of little John… Read More

Anne Frank House and Museum | Amsterdam

by Marian Krueger, in category Amsterdam, Culture

Nothing more than this nondescript sign flanks the entrance to the Anne Frank House and Museum in Amsterdam. When I learned I was going to be in Amsterdam over New Year’s, at the top of my list of must see places was the Anne Frank House. Now that her name has been in the news… Read More

MUSIC: “Little Talks” | Of Monsters and Men

by Marian Krueger, in category Culture, Iceland

Anyone who knows me well knows I am not a fan of Top 40 music. Yes, the occasional Kelly Clarkson or Rihanna song may make it onto my workout playlist, but I tend to stray far, far away from popular music. I turn instead to alternative music and anything a little off the beaten path.… Read More

Red Light District, Prostitution, and the City Amsterdam Bus | Amsterdam

by Marian Krueger, in category Amsterdam, Culture

Inevitably when you tell someone that you went to Amsterdam, you are asked if a) you went to a coffeeshop (see my earlier blog post about this topic) and b) if you went to the Red Light District. Since we weren’t out looking specifically the Red Light District, I wasn’t sure if we would stumble… Read More

#TRAVEL THOUGHTS: On yet another day where I can’t travel like most of you, I’m dreaming of my trip to Vietnam in August of 2019. I had such a great visit and I so miss the colors, the food, and of course, the people. What city are you reminiscing about today?

#TRAVEL/LIFE THOUGHTS: 2020 hasn’t been everyone #TRAVEL/LIFE THOUGHTS: 2020 hasn’t been everyone’s favorite year, but regardless we need to vote to have our voices heard. I felt like I was back in school reading through the huge booklets Los Angeles sends out voters, but it’s my responsibility to understand what I am voting for in this election. So many propositions and millions of dollars spent to get voters to vote a certain way. Thank God I didn’t rely on the commercials to vote because the ones with the most money shouldn’t be the ones to win. Make your voice heard and vote because every vote does count. I’m still optimistic that the political system can work and that our country can move forward. Did you vote today or are you going in person on Election Day?

Today was the first day where I could see and smell it. Smells like a campfire and the sky is just weird looking. Here’s to hoping they get it all under control soon and that everyone can be safe. And I can see sun and some blue sky again! 🌞

#TRAVEL/LIFE THOUGHTS: If you know me or follow me #TRAVEL/LIFE THOUGHTS: If you know me or follow me, you’ve probably noticed that I went from traveling and posting often to pretty much barely anything for the past two years. I’ve experienced some twists and turns on this journey we call life and that’s taken me away from what I’ve loved: My website and my love of travel. Today I am officially divorced after two years of legal procedures. I will have more on my site as I get it up and going again but first this. The long cross country drive I just took? Yeah that’s because I decided to pack up and move to Los Angeles. Got here on the 1st, promptly got a cold the next day and oh yeah - don’t know where my movers are yet with my stuff.
.
So if you’re feeling down, know that life is constantly changing and evolving. Choose wisely and you’ll be rewarded. Nothing is better than warm weather, water, and sand. (Don’t panic - I didn’t go to the #beach but this is what I’ve always thought of when I’ve thought of California.

#TRAVEL THOUGHTS: What happens when you visit Las #TRAVEL THOUGHTS: What happens when you visit Las Vegas? Do you go where you’ve already been or do you go somewhere new? I’m all for trying new things and you can imagine my surprise when I found a Jollibee here. It was inside a Seafood City, which I would never have visited as I don’t eat seafood. But Seafood City is actually a rather large Filipino market that transported me from the desert of Nevada straight back to the Philippines. They have everything and then some as well as a Red Ribbon bakery, Chow King, and of course Jollibee.how can you resist the Jollibee bee’s face?
