The Buccaneer

The Buccaneer
My terrace at The Buccaneer

This amazing terrace with an unbelievable view is from my room at The Buccaneer luxury resort in St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. During my brief stay here in December 2011, I settled in quite comfortably, but is that surprising? Set on 340 acres, the resort is expansive and appears to go on further than your eyes will lead you to believe. When the resort opened in 1947, it had only 11 rooms. Today there are a variety of room styles and locations to appeal to everyone. We’re talking 16 different types of room accommodations from basic rooms to suites to the Luxury Beachside Doubloons for 138 guestrooms in total. Whether you are a honeymoon couple looking for a romantic getaway or a family on an annual vacation, The Buccaneer will certainly appeal not only to your taste, but to your individual needs.

Check out that bed in the Luxury Beachside Doubloon!

When I entered my room at The Buccaneer, I was more than pleasantly surprised. Yes, I was staying in one of the Luxury Beachside Doubloons. This expansive room was all for me and me alone. A ground floor room with a terrace facing Mermaid Beach, this luxury villa-style room is more than I could have imagined for one person. From The Buccaneer web site:

Named for the gold Spanish coins that washed up on the beach from sunken galleons, the Doubloons are the newest and largest of our accommodations. Located on the East side of beautiful Mermaid Beach, these private and luxurious villa-style accommodations have sitting areas with picture windows and marbled floors, patios and balconies with dramatic views of the sea and Christiansted Harbor.

Each oversized room can interconnect through the patio or balcony to another Doubloon, and offers guests the option of ground floor convenience or second floor privacy. Fine furnishings, walk-in closets, spectacular baths with whirlpool tubs and separate showers make these rooms a favorite for honeymoon guests.

Near the terrace was the main living area with a huge four poster bed that I almost had to jump up to get onto (believe me – I’m not complaining!). Along the wall was a sofa with a large flat screen TV and small refrigerator. On the opposite side near the entrance was a large mirror and sink with everything to get ready and the largest walk-in closet I have ever seen in a hotel. I can tell you that the closet was bigger than some apartments I have had! The bathroom was large as well with another sink, a separate shower, toilet area, and a huge whirlpool tub. Unfortunately, during my stay the tub was not working, but other than that I had no complaints.

The BuccaneerClearly the Luxury Beachside Doubloons are the newest, largest, and probably best accommodations on site. During my first day at The Buccaneer, Vicki Locke, Marketing Manager, was kind enough to provide me with a guided property tour. I was extremely fortunate to have been able to see as many rooms as humanly possible and then some! The rooms and suites each have their own unique style. This particular room was light and bright with two double beds and was recently renovated with the partial wall dividing the sleeping area from the bathroom.

The BuccaneerCheck out the incredible views from their terrace! Some people like the beachside rooms while others want to be closer to the Great House for easy access to dining, shopping, and getting in and out of the resort. Others enjoy the Ocean Front rooms near Mermaid Beach or Grotto Beach, especially with the Beach Shack and the pool in that area. Whether you stay in the Tennis Villas, the Ridge Rooms or the Doubloons, you simply can’t go wrong. Some people simply visit The Buccaneer to play golf just like Vice President Biden did over the holidays. The Buccaneer is on FaceBook and they’ve posted a picture of him at while he was there. Be it a vice president, a Republican, a Democrat, actor, athlete, or musician, The Buccaneer has had it’s fair share of visitors over the years and you can join the list if you decide to spend a few luxurious days here.

  1. The Buccaneer has large rooms with incredible views. The staff is top notch and our guests could not wait to come back! (We live on the island.)
It is an all-inclusive resort for a honeymoon getaway or a family reunion, like our 35th wedding anniversary.
The other resorts pale in comparison to the Buccaneer! After living on the island for 11 years, we should know.

    1. I am not for sure but I don’t think it is an all-inclusive resort. We are planning to stay there this October and I do not se an all-inclusive option.
      Please advise.
      Thank you!!!!!

      1. Hi Shere,

So glad you’ll get to experience the Buccaneer first hand in October. It’s a wonderful resort in St. Croix. It’s not an all-inclusive resort although there are restaurants on property which are great. Enjoy your trip! Marian
