Hotel Reykjavík Centrum | Iceland

If you’re looking for modern amenities with traditional styling in the heart of Reykjavik, Iceland, then look no further than the Hotel Reykjavík Centrum. Upon first inspection, you might think that it’s not a hotel from the exterior, but instead someone’s home. If you want to feel like staying in something traditional, authentic, and less like a hotel that could be in just about any city anywhere, then the Hotel Reykjavík Centrum might be the hotel for you.

The glass structure that connects the two buildings in the picture above is what you enter through at the front of the hotel. Here the lobby is wide open and full of light because of the glass skylights overhead. From the hotel’s website:

Hotel Reykjavik Centrum is a new first class hotel in the heart of the city, opened on April 1st 2005. It is located on one of Reykjavik’s oldest streets, Adalstraeti, in a newly renovated building, the oldest part of which was built in 1764. On each side of it, new buildings have been constructed in the likeness of their historic predecessors Fjalakötturinn and Uppsalir. The hotel spreads over all three buildings, and is designed in the style found in Reykjavík around 1900. During its construction, the remains of a Viking longhouse from the Settlement Period were found. In 2006 an attractive exhibition centre 871 opened under the hotel, where the longhouse’s remains will be on display together with related exhibits. Among the finds excavated at the site were Iceland’s oldest human remains, dating from approximately 870 AD.

Hotel Reykjavík Centrum has a total of 89 rooms, each fitted with modern amenities including satellite TV, telephone, Internet access, mini-bar, radio, iron and board, hair dryer, safe and tea & coffee set. All rooms have en-suite bathroom with either a shower or a bath. The hotel offers rooms with facilities for disabled persons, and adjoining rooms (walk-through) are available upon request. Hotel Reykjavík Centrum offers first-class services, including room service and porter service, as well as excellent facilities for business guests.

The rooms are large and the colors soft and muted. With a variety of room types from single, single deluxe, double, double deluxe, a two-level junior suite, and 30 square meter traditional Nordic style studio apartments. I personally loved how it felt like a friend’s home with the color choices, the richness of the hardwood floors, and the overall feel of the hotel. If you tend to lean toward traditional styling, then the Hotel Reykjavík Centrum is definitely the hotel for you. There is a breakfast buffet, laundry service, and business services available. With a small convenience store nearby as well as restaurants, the Hotel Reykjavík Centrum is central to all that you’ll need during your stay in Reykjavik.

Rack rates for a room are around 262 EUR per night, but with an advanced purchase depending on the time of the year, I saw rates as low as 114 EUR per night. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, a romantic getaway, or somewhere to escape from it all, the Hotel Reykjavík Centrum is an excellent option right in the heart of Reykjavik.
