While you might first think only of price when choosing a hotel, you should also remember that time is money. If I only had 48 hours in Houston, I would look for a central Houston hotel to consider as my Texas home base. Another way to choose a hotel is to review your plans and find a hotel that’s equidistant to everything. However you choose your hotel, check out IHG’s Houston city guide to help you narrow down your choices.

If you’re looking to spend your 48 hours in Houston shopping ’til you drop, then consider the Galleria/Uptown neighborhood of Houston. Here you’ll find the largest mall in Texas, The Galleria, which is also the seventh largest mall in the United States. The Galleria spans 3 million total square feet with over 375 stores, including many high-end brands such as Prada, Coach, Louis Vuitton, and Gucci, among a host of others. After you’ve finished buying everything you can get your hands on, you might feel famished and want to dine in one of the many restaurants within the Galleria.

If you want to put your shopping behind you and gamble on discovering something else, it’s all up to you during your 48 hours in Houston. Stay in the Galleria/Uptown neighborhood or venture off to the best eating neighborhood in Houston, Montrose. Only about 15 minutes from the Galleria/Uptown area of Houston, Montrose is a small, four square mile neighborhood. How do they pack a punch with an eclectic mix of restaurants that include Indian, Mexican, fusion, burgers, tacos, and barbecue? Only you will know when you try to pick one during your 48 hours in Houston.

Maybe you’re looking to enjoy some fun in between all that crazy shopping you have planned. Houston has many great attractions, especially space-related ones like Houston’s own Space Center Houston, which is home to NASA’s Mission Control. Where else can you go and have lunch with an astronaut? If museums are of interest to you, take a ride by bus or by the convenient METRORail system over to the Museum District. This pedestrian-friendly district contains 19 cultural institutions like the Holocaust Museum Houston, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, or the Health Museum, which is an affiliate of the Smithsonian. You might have a hard time deciding which museums to visit during your 48 hours in Houston, but you should definitely pick at least one.

If all you have is a quick 48 hours in Houston, it’s pretty easy to enjoy some of the best of what Houston has to offer. Think of your trip to Houston as a teaser. You’ll visit once and then have to visit again and again. Have you visited Houston yet?
